Facebook’s dating app revs up romance scams
Perth Consumer protection authorities have warned “sextortion” scammers are increasingly targeting people on social media and dating websites, with models being used to dupe victims into sending explicit photos and videos that are then used as blackmail. In one recent case, a year-old West Australian man sent a video of himself in a “compromising” position to a woman he thought he knew and recently befriended on Facebook. When he refused to pay, the video was sent to his girlfriend. The scammers then sent a message to his mother and uncle to show they were serious about the threat. It has received reports from eight people who have been blackmailed in this way since December last year, but said it believed that was just the tip of the iceberg. The department’s director of retail and services, Lanie Chopping, said none of the eight victims sent money, but the emotional impact was significant. Ms Chopping said the scammers, who in all eight recent cases were from overseas, went to great lengths to make their profiles appear real.

Friday, January 9, , When you want to get something done by your partner when he or she is completely disagreeing, you tend to threaten emotionally. So, without being aware of the fact that you are blackmailing, you are already doing it. But we shall talk about that in a different article. If you come across these signs in your relationship, it is better to discuss things with your partner in a healthy way. Don’t try to confront your partner or corner her as that would be a threat to your relationship. Whatever she says, she expects you to do it without questioning.

Facebook FB is launching a dating application later this year, and users are already perceiving a rise in “catfishers” — crooks pretending to be lovelorn in an attempt to pull off a romance scam. Residents of the Pietermaritzburg house. Wanda Hennig His first African “son”, Psychology Maziwisa, was devastated, but not surprised, to learn of his former mentor’s suicide. Maziwisa, now a lawyer thanks to Roebuck’s generosity, knew a different side to the Peter Roebuck story. Six weeks after Roebuck’s death, Maziwisa and some of Roebuck’s “sons” — who initially defended his reputation as a loving father figure — have now described a disturbingly dysfunctional lifestyle within the walls of the houses they shared.
They talk of sexual misconduct, Roebuck’s repeated beatings of them on their bare buttocks and of the decision of some to blackmail him as he tried to protect his public reputation as a champion of education and social justice. Yet Maziwisa — one of his chief accusers — does not condemn him; rather, he describes Roebuck as “a special person” in his life. Roebuck was not a sexual predator, he says, but a flawed person who strove to express a genuine love through his generosity but who could not acknowledge his own complex sexuality — a tragedy that led to his downfall.
That fall had begun back in October at St Joseph’s orphanage in Harare, Zimbabwe, which housed 55 boys, orphans or children from destitute families. Roebuck was visiting the boy who would become his first African son, a soon to be orphan. The year old — Maziwisa — would also apparently become the love of his life.

The BBC’s ‘Click’ news programme on Friday 15 September gives a disturbing account of how these frauds work, why unsuspecting people get lured into the trap and some of the consequences – not only financial – to the victims. The programme takes us to France, where police say they learn of incidents every day, with most going unreported because of embarrassment or fear.
A year-old man gives an anonymous account of his experience of being lured into taking his clothes off by an online conversation with an attractive young woman. Typically, if blackmail demands are not met, the victim will be contacted by the ‘Police’ to demand a fine for their ‘crime’. The sums of money demanded – and often paid out – are substantial.
